Paulo Coelho, The Zahir

The Zahir by Paulo Coelho tells the story of a war correspondent who leaves her husband, a bestselling novelist, after ten years of marriage without explanations or any clues to where she is. He starts a journey to look for her and alongside find answers to his questions about their unfulfilled marriage and the reason behind her disappearance.

This book delves in the institution of marriage and relationships, commitment, freedom, happiness, selfishness... It deals with how people tend to take very important things in their life for granted and only feel their true value when they are lost. It emphasizes the notions of listening, caring, understanding, and being there for your partner body and soul.

The book is a wonderful discovery about human relations with all the new concepts and thoughts it brings out but the ending was beyond my expectations.

Quotes:

"That is why it is so important to let certain things go. To release them. To cut loose. People need to understand that no one is playing with marked cards; sometimes we win and sometimes we lose. Don't expect to get anything back, don't expect recognition for your efforts, don't expect your genius to be discovered or your love to be understood. Complete the circle. Not out of pride, inability or arrogance, but simply because whatever it is no longer fits in your life. Close the door, change the record, clean the house, get rid of the dust. Stop being who you were and become who you are."

"Freedom is not the absence of commitments, but the ability to choose - and commit yourself to what is best for you."

"I learned something recently: our true friends are those are with us when the good things happen. They cheer us on and are pleased by our triumphs. False friends only appear at difficult times, with the sad, supportive faces, when, in fact, our suffering is serving to console them for their miserable lives. When things were bad last year, various people I had never ever seen before turned up to ‘console’ me. I hate that."

"I believe in signs....what we need to learn is always there before us, we just have to look around us with respect & attention to discover where God is leading us and which step we should take. When we are on the right path, we follow the signs, and if we occasionally stumble, the Divine comes to our aid, preventing us from making mistakes."

"I heard other people speaking in the name of freedom, and the more they defended this unique right, the more enslaved they seemed to be to their parents' wishes, to a marriage in which they had promised to stay with the other person "for the rest of their lives", to the bathroom scales, to their diet, to half-finished projects, to lovers to whom they were incapable of saying "no" or "it's over", to weekends when they were obliged to have lunch with people they didn't even like. Slaves to luxury, to the appearance of luxury, to the appearance of the appearance of luxury. Slaves to a life they had not chosen, but which they had decided to live because someone had managed to convince them that it was all for the best. And so their identical days and nights passed, days and nights in which adventure was just a word in a book or an image o the television that was always on, and whenever a door opened, they would say “I’m not interested. I’m not in the mood.” How could they possibly know if they were in the mood or not if they had never tried? But there was no point in asking; the truth was they were afraid of any change that would upset the world they had grown used to."

Stories For Parents, Children And Grandchildren Volume 1 by Paulo Coelho

Don't judge this book by its title and assume that it is for children only! It is a wonderful collection of short stories and anecdotes from different cultures that entail certain wisdom and morals. It is a great book for both children and adults.

"Saadi of Shiraz and prayer

Saadi of Shiraz used to tell the following story:

'When I was a child, I used to pray with my father, my uncles and my

cousins. Every night we would gather together to listen to a passage

from the Koran.

On one such night, while my uncle was reading a passage out loud, I

noticed that most of the people were asleep. I said to my father: "Not one

of these dozy people is listening to the words of the Prophet. They'll never

reach God."

And my father replied: "My dear son, look for your own path with

faith and let others take care of themselves. Who knows, perhaps they

are talking to God in their dreams. Believe me, I would much prefer you

to be sleeping alongside them than to hear your harsh words of judgement

and condemnation.""
